Route-based choice
Flat roads and rolling terrain are where many riders start thinking about deeper carbon wheels. The routes are fast enough for the wheel choice to feel meaningful, but usually varied enough that pure depth is not the only answer.
For mostly flat roads
If your rides are mostly flat and open, a 50mm wheelset can be attractive. It gives the bike a stronger road presence and feels more purposeful than a shallow wheel. Riders who spend a lot of time at steady speed often enjoy that deeper profile.
The caveat is wind. Flat roads are often exposed, and exposed roads can be gusty. If your local flat routes cross fields, bridges, or coastal sections, a moderate depth may be easier to live with than the deepest option.
For rolling terrain
Rolling terrain changes the decision. You still have faster sections, but you also have repeated climbs, descents, corners, and changes in speed. A 38mm or 50mm wheel can both make sense here. The better choice depends on how much you value calm handling versus the deeper look.
If the climbs are short and the roads are sheltered, 50mm can work well. If the terrain is windy, rough, or constantly changing direction, 38mm may feel more natural.
| Flat and calm | 50mm is often the satisfying visual and road-feel choice. |
|---|---|
| Rolling and mixed | 38mm or 50mm depending on wind and handling preference. |
| Flat but windy | Do not ignore crosswind; 38mm may be the smarter daily option. |
Do not choose depth without thinking about braking
Rim brake carbon wheels need suitable pads and clean brake tracks regardless of depth. On rolling routes, you may brake repeatedly on descents or before turns. That makes setup more important than a product photo suggests.
If your rolling rides include long descents, think about heat and braking habits before choosing a wheel only for its side profile.
The value angle
At a $299 price point, it is tempting to choose the depth that feels like the most wheel for the money. That is understandable, but not always wise. A wheelset that suits 80 percent of your rides is usually a better value than a more dramatic wheelset you use less often.
Use your normal route, not your fantasy route, as the reference. If you ride rolling backroads every weekend, choose for those roads.
My practical recommendation
For flat and rolling riding, most rim brake riders should start by comparing 38mm and 50mm. Pick 38mm if you want versatility and calm handling. Pick 50mm if you want a more obvious carbon look and your roads are not too gusty.
